Dean drivers are trained to handle a multitude of situations that arise on the school bus through a variety of educational courses.
Drivers are required to take and maintain Department of Transportation physical exam certifications and are part of a random federal drug and alcohol screening program in compliance with Michigan and federal laws.
Within their first year, all drivers and attendants complete a Lansing Community College Business & Community Institute certified program covering common medical and behavioral concerns in student transportation, as well as potential incidents such as seizures, airway obstructions and injuries.
Heartsaver First Aid/CPR training is provided by health care professionals through the Business & Community Institute (BCI) at Lansing Community College.
New staff receive training on special needs categories and communication strategies. There is also an annual review of properly securing special needs passengers and emergency evacuation planning.
Staff are trained in the Crisis Prevention Institute’s (CPI) Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, adapted for school bus settings, to manage behavior safely and prevent incidents.
Dean provides an advanced defensive driving course that addresses road distractions and safety techniques, portions of which are integrated into Dean’s START program and CDL training.
Drivers and attendants conduct evacuation drills with general education students and review evacuation plans with special education students.
Drivers and attendants engage in dynamic, company-developed training that evolves with industry trends and legal updates. The curriculum emphasizes traffic safety and empathetic service, using realistic scenarios including explosive device searches, peer-reviewed driving, and seminars on human trafficking, child abuse, autism care and resilience.
